About Robi Axiata PLC.
Robi Axiata Limited is a public limited company with controlling stakes held by Axiata Group Berhad of Malaysia (61.82%) and Bharti Airtel of India (28.18%), while the general public holds the remaining 10% stake. The company, initially known as Telekom Malaysia International (Bangladesh) operating under the brand name 'Aktel,' commenced operations in 1997. In 2010, it was rebranded as 'Robi,' and the company changed its name to Robi Axiata Limited. As the second-largest mobile network operator in Bangladesh, Robi has 56.4 million subscribers, representing a 30% market share. Of these subscribers, around 32.4 million are 4G users, constituting 57% of the total subscribers and 75% of data users. Robi ensures 98.5% population coverage of its 4G network with over 16,000 4G sites, and it boasts the highest percentage of data users (76.5%) in the industry. Following the merger with Airtel Bangladesh in 2016, Robi Axiata Limited became the largest merger in the country and the first-ever merger in the mobile telecom sector of Bangladesh. The company is known for introducing innovative digital services and pioneering mobile financial services in underserved communities. Robi conducted a successful trial run of 5G and was the first operator to launch Voice over LTE technology on its 4.5G network.
