About Western Marine Shipyard Limited
Western Marine Shipyard Ltd., established in 2000 in Chattogram, Bangladesh, is the country's leading shipbuilder. It is part of the Western Marine Services Ltd., a group of marine professionals initially focused on ship repair and marine supplies export. The company's founders aimed to create a hub of technological excellence to meet global maritime industry demands. Initially starting with a shipyard on the eastern bank of the Karnaphuli river for building inland vessels and barges, Western Marine Shipyard has grown into a world-class shipyard covering over 45 acres, with a substantial investment of Tk. 300 crore. The shipyard employs around 3500 people, including skilled and semi-skilled laborers, and over five hundred professionals in various fields. Western Marine Shipyard has gained international recognition and has undertaken significant shipbuilding projects for countries such as Germany, Denmark, Tanzania, New Zealand, Kenya, the UAE, Norway, India, Ecuador, and more. Notable projects include multi-purpose cargo vessels, ice-class container vessels, passenger vessels, car ferries, and offshore patrol vessels. The shipyard holds certificates from Bureau Veritas for health and safety (OHSAS 18000) and environmental management (ISO 14000). It has also received an ISO 9001 certificate for quality from Germanischer Lloyd and Det Norske Veritas, making it the only Integrated Management System (IMS) certified company in Bangladesh. Western Marine Shipyard has been honored with awards such as the World Maritime Day Award, HSBC Export Excellence Award, and the Gold National Export Trophy from the Bangladesh government. The shipyard has built over 150 ships and is currently working on more than 39 ongoing projects, including deep-sea fishing trawlers, port utility vessels, tugs, container ships, tankers, bulk carriers, and passenger ships. The company is recognized for its reliability, high quality, competitive pricing, and adherence to deadlines, making it a leader among shipbuilders in the region.
